Experimental Prototypes

MINOTAUR is a Transmitter-Receiver Wireline Filberbank communications test-bed that enables the prototyping and evaluation of physical layer algorithms targeting Multi-Carrier-based wireline communications.

The MINOTAUR test-bed is implemented as two separate full-duplex modems. Each modem is implemented using one Virtex-5 FPGA and three floating-point TMS320C6727 DSPs. All the baseband signal processing chain including the I/Q generation and I/Q demodulation, upsampling and downsampling is performed digitally (using the software defined radio concept). Therefore all the signal processing strategies are highly customizable.

On top of that the MINOTAUR testbed includes PC software to monitor the performance and the behaviour of the Filterbank algorithm on real-time, such as the data rate, the bit error rate, the constellation, the channel estimation and the CFO.

SILENCE is a Visible Light Communication (VLC) System test-bed using the Software Defined Radio (SDR) concept. Next generation illumination systems will be based on LED technology due to its appealing characteristics in terms of energy efficiency and life expectancy. Nevertheless, these illumination devices can be used for a complementary purpose, data transmission. Motivated by this, CTTC has built SILENCE test-bed, one of the world’s first VLC prototype featuring a communication link based on the standard IEEE 802.15.7. The use of SDR techniques provides SILENCE with enough flexibility to rapidly cope with future enhancements.

LENA is an open source product-oriented LTE/EPC Network Simulator that allows LTE small/macro cell vendors to design and test Self Organized Network (SON) algorithms and solutions. Target applications for LENA include the design and performance evaluation of DL & UL Schedulers, Radio Resource Management Algorithms, Inter-cell Interference Coordination solutions, Load Balancing and Mobility Management, Heterogeneous Network (HetNets) solutions, End-to-end QoE provisioning, Multi-RAT network solutions and Cognitive LTE systems. LENA is based on the popular ns-3 network simulator for internet systems. The development of LENA is open to the community in order to foster early adoption and contributions by industrial and academic partners.

r-SENSE (use Google Chrome or Safari) is a demonstrator platform, enabling very low delay monitoring WSN systems for indoor/outdoor environments. r-Sense provides environmental quality measurements including human presence and behavior detection and is applicable in both private and public spaces.

Three key points are considered:

  • Data gathering, using conveniently placed WSN nodes, and data routing towards the gateway node with network connectivity (WLAN, GPRS, PLC,… ).
  • Data processing, in order to get added value information (environmental parameter statistics and prediction), using data history saved in the gateway node.
  • Information representation and user interaction through a web page allowing for parameter evolution visualization, analysis and control in real time.
